Morning everyone,

I signed up a little while back for this years run and thought i'd introduce myself.

First time on the run and very excited about it. Entered on me lonesome currently, but hoping to persuade a couple of mates to join up. Looks like a right royal adventure.

I used to work for Gumball on the support crew so will be nice to be on the participants side of the fence for once.

Just really looking forward to blasting through those deserts with everyone. Its gonna be an exciting time.

Robin - 28 - Oxford - Honda CBR 600 RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrr

Forum: Cannonball Bike Run 2010

Insurance
All riders will receive a detailed info pack 6-8 weeks prior to the event covering insurance, breakdown recovery, what to bring and all the essential information you need to know. Had a few inquiries about insurance so here are some tips regarding that:

Your first port of call should be your existing insurance company to see if they will extend coverage for Morocco & Spain (plus France if you intend riding to the start). Note this only has to be for the duration of the event, not for the whole year.

If they will then, check to see that they are also extending your normal level of coverage also. ie if you normally have Fully Comprehensive insurance then check that this is what they are giving you as some will only offer Third Party Only.

If they won't play ball then you could shop around and renew with another company that will. In the past we have taken out a new policy just prior to the event then cancelled it afterwards - obviously check out what the cancellation policy is but mostly you only pay pro-rata.

Your insurance company will issue you the green card - this is simply proof that you have the insurance coverage and you will need to bring it with you. Even if you can't get it for Morocco you should get it for Spain.

If none of that bears fruit or you can't be arsed you can purchase insurance at the port of entry in Morocco. This is fairly inexpensive (around 50 Euros for 10 days) but is Third Party Only. So, to be clear it won't pay out if you crash your bike and no-one else is involved. It will though pay any personal or property damage to others if you crash into them and it is your fault. If anyone crashes into you, then you claim from their insurance. Hope that helps!

Forum: Cannonball Bike Run 2010

Road surface tips

Here are a few tips on the road surfaces and hazards to watch out for while riding Morocco. Feel free to add on the this.

Starting out from Tangier I found the road are very slick and dusty along the coast. The rear will spin up really easy on this stuff. Things improve a bit when you get to the mountains. Here, there is varying levels of grip on the different types of tarmac. I found the brown stuff to be the best and most reliable. Beware also melting tarmac, which is pretty slippy and will probably be worse this year.

Keep an eye out also for the many diesel on oil slicks which can occur almost anywhere, but alot on hairpins, roundabouts or near ports where HGV's come thru.

Around the citys the tarmac is very slick with spillages everywhere and major traffic. Remember the bigger the vehicle the more rights on the road they have, this puts us firmly low down the pecking order

Other hazards are generally due to people, Standing at the side of the road seems the be a national sport in Morocco. Many people will wave and cheer. Use your horn to let peeps know your coming.

Its a good idea to take it handy thru the towns. People come out from blind alleys on bicycles but generally will keep to their own side of the road. The police have checkpoints at most of the town entrances and for the most part you just slow down a bit and they wave you thru.

If you do get caught at high speed or acting the mick the best thing to do is start asking directions or tell them you are on an ' eventione nationale ' they generally forget why they were stopping you and are delighted to help. If this fails a few Euro 'fine' will generally sort it but try not to do this as they will get wide to us

If we end up riding at night for whatever reason its essential to have a clear visor. This was the most scary part for me, especially after a long days riding when concentration is down. From daylight 120mph cruising down to max 50-60 at night, I found the best position to be just right of the center of the road. This keeps you out of the way of unlit donkey and carts that you will have passed by before seeing

The roads thru the desert are generally quite dusty again as you might imagine, certain route have dunes encroaching and narrowing the lanes a bit. 'Washes' are dips in the desert roads to allow water across and these can be sandy at the bottom or full of water after rain, as we found out.

Anyway these are a few of the things to watch out for but don't worry Morocco has mostly excellent roads that are a pleasure to ride.

Colin

Eire

Forum: Cannonball Bike Run 2009
